i've got an old friend from way back-- haven't been in touch much the last 25 years, but have been much more so during the last two months-- who won't put down the bottle and is driving everybody who's still in touch to distraction. the reality of alcoholism as a still-developing plot line, which is mostly ugly, and boring, and redundant as hell. Without knowing the outcome or if the shit's worth it. can't effin type this morning which is drving me crazy something bout the day is off-- made hotcocoa for the kid but used nog instead of milk, then added my fav chocolate before i noticed, she had one sip then set down and eventually came back with a book and kicked it over anyway. another friend who's been an on-and-off addict the whole time i've known him, i think. evolved from weed to eventually heroine, then the shit they prescribe you to get off heroine, then got himself off that as well, only to come to rest with on-going alcoholism himself. an...

preamble

ok, so here's the thought behind this blog-- I've maintained semi-regular contact with a few friends from college-- a time which is more than half a life-time past. We've all moved along on along our respective paths. The group includes a professor, two teachers, a public health worker, and a musician/writer. These labels are not necessarily that accurate and certainly don't fairly categorize or some up who we've become, but maybe just a jumping-off spot? We're spread across the country and out-of-the-country as well... It's an "interesting" time-- this 49th year (more or less.) Some of us have "been through it", others are embarking on new projects, new work... I mean, hell-- this part is challenging to put in words. But managing all our stuff-- keeping things afloat and our heads above water-- that's a given. teaching, a ramble part 1

teaching/coaching four classes right now: "brain games" (chess, sudoku, backgammon, 10,000, dominoes...), girls' volleyball, creative writing and personal narrative. at an inner-city school focused on credit recovery, fast-track to graduation, helping marginalized youth who have struggled in other settings. challenges: inconsistent attendance, poor sleep habits (tired students), cell phones, marijuana youth, low academic skills, apathy. pedagogical challenges: the polarity of highly-structured classrooms with timed activities moving kids from one activity to the next-- very teacher-based, top down, get in your seats and let's do this, then this, then this, "do-nows", "exit tickets" and all that... pros of this included commanding kids' attention-- like jumping into a swift river. the tempo is set and they are swept along (or not). cons of this: heavily dependent on the teacher and teacher prep.
